UK Grown

We grow around 80% of plants that we sell in our Plant Centre and we are continuously looking at ways to make this percentage even higher. No nursery can grow everything so when we do need to supplement our range we prioritise UK grown first and foremost. Most of our smaller suppliers are within a 60 mile radius of us.

Peat Free

We officially went Peat Free in Autumn 2019 both on the Nursery and The Plant Centre.

Organic

We were the first nursery to grow plants for a full size main avenue garden at The RHS Chelsea Flower Show organically and in compostable (rice husk) pots for Yeo Valley and Tom Massey.

We aim to be entirely organic in the near future.

Recyclable Pots & Materials

Taupe Pots are used where possible which are fully recyclable. We grow our plants on the nursery in Taupe Pots if available in the sizes we need. We are hoping the range will be increased as demand increases.

Our larger tree specimens are planted into air pots and these are re-used on the nursery.

All cardboard, green waste and spent compost are recycled.

Our nursery’s roadways are built from recycled material.

Rainwater Harvesting

By rainwater harvesting we are aiming to be totally self-sufficient for around 6 months of the year, hopefully more! We will still rely on some mains water when we have hot weather.

In 2022 we added 3 underground rainwater harvesting tanks to maximise the amount of rain water we use on the nursery.

Integrated Pest Management

IPM (Integrated Pest Management) is use on both the Nursery and The Plant Centre up to 95% of the time, whereby we are using natural predators and organisms to control pests and diseases. We don’t use neo neonicotinoids and never have. Our next-door neighbours have a field of beehives, this is proof that we don’t use any nasties!

Gentler Gardening

We encourage our customers to think about what they can do to reduce the impact they have on the environment. Biological controls are available in our Plant Centre Shop for Vine Weevil and Slugs and Snails. We encourage customers to think about what they use and very importantly when. For example, it is always best to spray after dusk when the Bees have gone to bed.

Training

We are committed to providing relevant environmental training and promoting environmental awareness to employees and, where appropriate, to suppliers and to communicating our environmental performance.
