“Mark Straver and Robin Wallis, experts in their field, are growers that I have worked with independently over the years. When they set up Hortus Loci I didn’t hesitate to ask them to help me with my show garden for Brewin Dolphin at Chelsea in 2012. The garden won a RHS Gold Medal and the coveted Best in Show. This was in no small part due to the superb plant quality and excellent service on which Hortus Loci pride themselves.”
I have been designing landscapes for many years now and have inevitably grown to know both Mark and Robin extremely well. These relationships have become friendships born of respect. I have a passion for plants, and an equally troublesome passion for everything to be as good as it possibly can be. Bluntly, I set impossible standards for myself and everyone else! Amazingly when I met Mark I realised as we stamped around a field of roses trying to find something ‘good enough’ in a far flung recess of central France that I had met my match.
His relentless energy (fuelled by the eponymous beverage) is now legendary and if one is inclined to listen to the same story five times a day one is rewarded with trucks full of exceptional plants. My feeling is that these two together are an unstoppable force and could bring about a much needed renaissance in English Trade nurseries.
I am proud of the fact that they take the trouble to know all the available growers of any species you care to name and will forge very good relationships with them allowing us fussy designers access to the most astonishingly diverse range of plant material. If and when things go wrong they are put right, as simple as that.
I very much hope that the vision, commitment to exceptional quality and rare good humour can combine to make this ambitious business a roaring success.”
“The topiary you delivered was the best I have ever seen; each ball a picture of health. You were generous with your sizing and therefore able to provide excellent value for money along with a great service. As a result I have one very happy client. Thank you ever so much.”
